Woman in Vehicle Struck, Killed by Train ID'd as Kingston Woman, 21

Police said DeAnna S. Bates, 21, was struck by a passenger train after her vehicle was driven onto the tracks.

South Kingstown police have identified the young woman killed when an Amtrak train struck her vehicle Saturday night as DeAnna S. Bates, 21, of Kingston.

Bates was pronounced dead at the scene after crews responded for a report of a train that had struck a vehicle on the tracks.

South Kingstown police said the vehicle was on the tracks off Waites Corner Road when it was struck by the train just before 11:30 p.m.

The train, a Boston to Washington, D.C., southbound train, was carrying 207 people along with a crew. Nobody on the train was injured.

Bates worked at Wakefield Liquors and was graduated from the University of Rhode Island this year. She was on the Dean’s List in the fall semester and studied Human Development and Family Studies.
