Police Log: Dec. 15, 2010

The following reports describe the actions of the South Kingstown Police Department from Saturday, Dec. 11 through Sunday, Dec. 12.

DUI

On Saturday, Dec. 11 around 12:06 a.m. a South Kingstown Police officer on patrol observed a vehicle coming up behind him without its headlights activated. The officer pulled over and let the driver pass. After observing the vehicle continue to drive without headlights the officer performed a traffic stop. The officer made contact with driver Constance McGinnis, 55, of 135 Indian Trail in Wakefield. As he did so he realized that the vehicle’s windshield wipers were on a high setting. McGinnis then exited the vehicle and as she did so the officer noticed she exhibited several signs of intoxication. After failing to perform field sobriety tests to the satisfaction of the officer, she was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. She was taken to SKPD, where she later refused a chemical test.

Around 12:46 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11 police towed a small motor scooter. While checking the VIN on the vehicle, it came back as stolen out of Kansas City, Missouri. Police called the Kansas City Police to inform them of the recovered vehicle.

On Saturday, Dec. 11 around 8:48 p.m., a police officer patrolling Pine Hill Road in Wakefield observed a vehicle passing him at a high rate of speed. The officer turned and pursued the vehicle down several streets, finally stopping it as it began circling South and Dockray Streets. Driver Ashley McBurney, 22, of 53 Ocean Village Court in Matunuck, stated she was just driving around. As the officer interviewed her he noticed she was exhibiting several signs of intoxication. After failing to perform a series of field sobriety tests to the satisfaction of the officer McBurney was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI. She was taken to SKPD, where during processing police located a small amount of marijuana in her purse. She was charged for possession as well.

Traffic stop yields two arrests

On Sunday, Dec. 12 around 2:25 a.m. officers conducting Operation Blue Riptide observed a red Chevrolet southbound on Route 1 crossing over the fog lanes with its passenger tires. The officers performed a traffic stop and made contact with driver Patrick Cole, 20, of 28 Franklin Rd. in Norwell, Mass. Cole performed field sobriety tests to the satisfaction of the officer, but he stated there was marijuana inside the vehicle when questioned. Police found and seized a small amount of marijuana and placed Cole in custody. Passenger Kristina Bopp, 19, of 59 Winifred Dr. in North Merrick, N.Y. was found to have marijuana on her person as well and was taken into custody. Cole was charged with transportation of alcohol by a minor and possession of marijuana. Bopp was also charged for possession.

Other Incidents

On Saturday, Dec. 11 around 1:50 a.m. police responded to 33 Spring St. to speak with a female caller who stated that as she drove by the Queens River Baptist Church something was thrown at her windshield, smashing it. Officers combed the area but were unable to flush out a suspect.

On Saturday, Dec. 11 police took a call from an out of state complainant who stated that while he was in Maryland he had been informed by a friend that someone had taken a large flat screen from his Main Street apartment in Wakefield. Police investigated the apartment and found no signs of forced entry. The television has an estimated value of $1,800.

Ezra Baer, 29, of 1266 Kingstown Rd. in Wakefield was arrested on Sunday, Dec. 12 after officers were dispatched to his home to serve a warrant for failure to appear in fourth district court. He was taken to SKPD, given a new court date, and released.

On Sunday, Dec. 12 a man reported to SKPD to report that his two vehicles had been entered during the night and numerous items had been taken. The victim indicated that both vehicles had been left unsecured. Once inside, the culprit(s) took various amounts of currency and a wallet.
