South Kingstown Police Warn Against 'Spoofing' Scam

Police said a resident was targeted this week.

The following is a news release:

On December 12, 2014, the South Kingstown Police were alerted to a caller ID spoofing scam that was attempted on a South Kingstown resident.

Caller ID spoofing occurs when a telephone’s caller ID displays a number that does not belong to the person calling. In this instance, the number being displayed on the caller ID is the police department’s number, 401-783-3321. The calling party advised the person was under indictment for tax fraud and that the officers of South Kingstown Police Department would arrest them unless an undisclosed debt was settled up. The resident asked for badge numbers and officer names and the calling party hung up.
