South Kingstown's Erik Murphy to Join LeBron James and Cleveland Cavs for Training Camp

Murphy, 23, is looking to have a break-out season.

South Kingstown native Erik Murphy will have a serious chance of winning an NBA championship this season as he gets ready to report for training camp with the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers.

Murphy, 23, was traded to the Cavaliers in July—a few weeks LeBron James announced he would be returning to the Cavs.

“It’s going to be a special experience to play with somebody like that on the floor,” Murphy told WPRI.com.

The 6-foot, 10-inch Murphy plays forward. He attended the University of Florida and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 2013 NBA Draft. He saw limited playing time and will look to have a break-out season this year.

Murphy ran into trouble in Florida when he was arrested in 2011 for breaking into a vehicle. He attributed the incident to excessive drinking and told CBS Sports it was a wake-up call that made him grow up and focus on basketball.
