Spring at Sunset Farm

The babies are arriving and spring is blossoming at Sunset Farm on Point Judith Road.

At historic Sunset Farm, part of the Narragansett treasure next to Kinney Bungalow, the calves are arriving on a regular basis. Resident farm caretakers Jeff and Susan Farrell tend to the newcomers in the same way as all the animals on the farm, with tender loving care.

The meat from the all natural fed cows is available for purchase year round. No hormones or antibiotics are used with this group. They are grass and corn silage fed. They are also a happy and friendly herd. Heading out into the pasture was no problem when Jeff took me out in a 4 wheel ATV. The new Moms had no hesitation when I interacted with their young ones even though the youngest calf was only 3 days old.

The cows on the farm are beef cows, not dairy, and they are at their prime for meat when they reach 28 months. There is only one Bull on the farm, Rambo, and his lineage guarantees that the offspring are healthy.

Although there are goats on hand for fun and a horse that belongs to Susan Farrell, the other meat product that is sold at the farm comes from the Berkshire Pigs. These pigs are black and white instead of our traditional concept of a “pink” pig.

As Jeff Farrell explained the pink pigs are hybrids that are continuously re-bred to create a “perfect” product but the meat takes on a different fat component that is less desirable than the less processed Berkshires. The pork chops and loins, bacon and sausage that are produced from the Sunset Farm resident porkers is available year round as well.
