Today: Former Resident Named Principal Forester, Community Summit Open House, Show Us Your Patch

1. DEM Names Principal Forester

RIDEM forestry brass announced yesterday that RI Division of Forest Environment has hired David Hall, a former South Kingstown resident and former Captain of the Snug Harbor Fire Company, to fill the long vacant Principal Forester position and to serve as the RI Wildland Fire Program Supervisor. 

David began last week and is fairly well settled in having moved from Maine to accept this employment opportunity.  David is a UMaine, Orono grad and has had experience with fire and fuels management in Texas and Washington State.

David’s work station is located at the Arcadia Forestry Headquarters.  He plans to attend the Northeast Forest Fire Protection Compact Ops meeting at the end of the month in Augusta to begin familiarizing himself with compact operations and committee structure.  

Additionally, he will have in-depth training from the USFS in Federal Excess Property Program and the DoD Firefighter Property Program in December. 

2. URI Professor Makes An Appearance On Sesame Street

Sara Sweetman knows how to get teachers excited about science and how to inspire young students to seek answers through the scientific method, even those in kindergarten. 

The director of a nationally renowned science education network at the University of Rhode Island, Sweetman has even been at home in New York, working with the cast and crew of Sesame Street to help guide 12 of the show’s science, technology, engineering and math segments.

But she was never prepared to star in four Sesame Street episodes and the 6- to 12-hour filming sessions needed to get those segments just right. The entire article is available on the URI news website.

3. Healthy Community Summit Open House

The South Kingstown Healthy Places By Design Project Continues this afternoon with an open house from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the South County YMCA, 165 Broad Roack Road (map).

Tour the work space of the team and find out what your fellow community members have been working on.  View the designs and changes in progress, consider how it might help to make the community healthier, and offer feedback. 

4. Show Us Your Patch 

The South Kingstown Patch is more than a news website. It’s a meeting place for the community – where information flows both ways. To help make that a reality for everyone, we are holding an information session for the community.

As part of the network of southern Rhode Island Patch sites, editors will meet with the community today at 05:00 pm at the , 82 Pierce St, East Greenwich, RI for an interactive tour of the Patch sites for those new to them. The session is free and people are welcome to come at any time during the two hours. The session will be hands on and informal. We look forward to seeing you!

5. A Little Bit Of Rock And Roll

The Courthouse Center for the Arts is privileged to announce an exhibit of historic rock and roll by Watt Casey, photographer. There will be 35 photographs showing musicians in concert, behind the scenes, and in private moments. The vintage photographs include  Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen and Leon Russell.

The exhibit opens today at 10:00 a.m. and continues through December 1.  The photographs will then be available for purchase.
