Today: Recreation Commission Meets, Gingerbread House Contest, Blood Drive In Narragansett

1. The South Kingstown Recreation Commission meets tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Tri-Pond Nature Center on Asa Pond Road.  On tonight’s agenda is a continued discussion of the potential re-naming of West Kingston Park and Bike Trail Development at Old Mountain Field.

2. Gingerbread House Contest to benefit South County Habitat for Humanity

The Third Annual Gingerbread House Contest is accepting registrations until Nov. 28. Categories for entries are Youth Group (under 17), Adult Individual (17 and over), and Adult Group. Enter by contacting Penny66@gmail.com.

Bring the house, on a firm base and well-labeled, to Brickley’s Ice Cream Store at 322 Main St., in Wakefield on Monday, Nov. 28 between 10 a.m. and noon or Tuesday, Nov. 29, between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Houses will be on display and ballots available in Wakefield at Brickley’s and Guys and Gals Hair Salon, as well as at other merchants on Main Street from Dec. 1st through December 22nd. Each ballot costs $1 and there is no limit on the number of ballots that any voter can cast. Votes can also be mailed to: South County Habitat – Gingerbread House Contest, PO Box 68, Shannock, RI 02875. Make sure to include the gingerbread house number. All funds go to South County Habitat for Humanity to build real houses in our community.

3. To celebrate the publishing of his new book More Ticks in More Places: The Ever-Changing Ecology of Ticks and Disease 
in the Northeastern USA, professor  Tom Mather will give a lacture at the URI Swan Hall Auditorium, 60 Upper College Road, on Thursday, December 1.  The Doors open at 6:15 pm for book shopping and socializing over sweets, and the 
Lecture starts at 7:30 pm. This event is Free and Open to the Public.  

4. Though we began with a wet morning, the sun is expected to peek out from behind the clouds today with a high around 51, according to Weatherbug’s Wakefield forecast.  The rain is expected to return tomorrow.

5. If you’re in a giving mood today, the Rhode Island Blood Center will be holding a blood drive in nearby Narragansett at the South County Donor Center, 14 Woodruff Ave. from 9:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. The Rhode Island Blood Center is the only source of blood and blood products for the hospitals' of Rhode Island while also serving customers in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The Center must collect 240 to 280 pints of blood daily to meet the needs of its community, relying on the generosity of volunteer blood donors.
