Updated: House Fire on Gooseberry Road Sunday

The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of Sunday night's fire in Snug Harbor.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — The Union Fire District on Sunday responded to a house fire around 8:30 p.m. on Gooseberry Road, according to fire Chief Steven Pinch. No one was home when the fire started. One firefighter suffered a minor injury.

When the firefighters arrived, Chief Pinch said, heavy fire was visible and the structure was "fully involved." Seven engines and two ladder trucks responded.

The fire was mostly out in about an hour, he said, but decision was made to rotate the crews, due to the weather conditions. The firefighters stayed on scene until midnight dealing with hot spots and mopping up, he said.

"Wind is an issue" in that location, he said, and the cold also complicated the firefighting. The building is a total loss, he said.

The property owners live out of state, and they are coming to Snug Harbor today to look at the situation.

"We're sorry for the loss" of the property, he said, but added at least no one was seriously injured. Also, the home was sited in the center of the lot, and the fire did not spread to other homes.

The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause, Chief Pinch said.
