URI Announces Plans For Partially In-Person 2021 Commencement
While there will be some coronavirus-related changes, this year is expected to look more like 2019 than 2020.

KINGSTON, RI — Spring is fast approaching, and even as Rhode Island ramps up coronavirus vaccine distribution and case numbers decline, it's hard to say what the state of the pandemic both here and across the country will be in the coming months. With this May expected to be vastly improved from last year, the University of Rhode Island is planning to hold at least some in-person commencement ceremonies for graduating seniors.
Commencement weekend will kick off May 21 and include both virtual and in-person events.
As of now, the university is planning to hold in-person graduation ceremonies at the outdoor Meade Football Stadium. Because of pandemic-related restrictions, only graduates will be able to attend. Family and friends will be invited to attend virtually.

"Members of the Class of 2021 have faced extraordinary challenges throughout the past year, but have also persevered and now deserve to celebrate their unique and amazing accomplishments," the university said in a statement. "We look forward to celebrating the Class of 2021 and all that it has overcome and achieved during this historic period for the University, nation, and world."
All in-person commencement plans are tentative and will be revised if necessary, based on the state of the pandemic in May. More information about commencement weekend will be announced later in the semester.

Last March, URI and other schools were forced to cancel commencement as the coronavirus pandemic prohibited any large gatherings. Virtual celebration events were held instead.
