KINGSTON, RI — All University of Rhode Island students will be required to be tested for the coronavirus, the university announced Monday. The testing effort is aimed at getting an idea of the prevalence of the virus within the campus community.

The mandate applies to all students, both on- and off-campus, and will be conducted in collaboration with the Rhode Island Department of Health. Two testing sites for asymptomatic students will be set up: one in the Ryan Center parking lot and another in the atriums of the Memorial Union. Test will be self-administered, overseen by a trained university staff member or Department of Health employee.

Any student with symptoms will be tested separately, and is asked to call Health Services at 401-874-2246 for a telehealth visit and to schedule a test.

Students will receive an email the day before their scheduled test with information about their test site and more. Before arriving, students are asked to fill out a copy of the requisition form and bring their health insurance card. Test results can be expected within 48 hours.

The university recently reported a small COVID-19 outbreak, mostly among off-campus students, though it was not enough to spur a stay-at-home order or shift to fully remote learning, as has been the case at other schools such as Providence College and Johnson and Wales.
