Viewfinder: South County Commons Block Party [Video]

"Eat, drink and be merry," was the theme Thursday night at South County Commons when patrons and business owners took to the streets.

Thursday night found the avenues of South County Commons cordoned off as businesses moved outside for an evening of music, food and entertainment.

The 2011 Summer Concert Series, held weekly, featured a country hoedown with live band, Ten Rod Ramblers. Camped out in lawn chairs and spread out on blankets, families, couples and Commons patrons gathered to listen to music and sample the eats prepared by local restaurants.

On hand for the series and serving up Italian fare was the executive chef for Trattoria Romana Jay Dias, providing footlong meatball subs, sausage and peppers and cold drinks. Jay heads up the kitchen at the restaurant's catering division, Trattoria Romana Express, located in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

Also cooking to order was Paul Comorosky and his mother Marcia of Commons Convenience. On the menu was steak and bean chili and grilled dogs. Commons convenience offers Meals to Go, a rotating dinner menu offering two dinner choices prepared fresh each evening.

Set up around the circle were tables, games and presentations hosted by the South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce, The Goddard School, local radio station 99.3 and Edward Jones Investments.

Perhaps the most widely recognized participant was Smokey the Bear, who rolled into the party on Snug Harbor's Engine 16, entertaining  children and adults with a little help from his friends. Volunteers from Station 5 provided traditional UFD firefigter lids for Smokey's admirers and handed out fire safety materials.

Next Thursday night, a pirate's bounty will be presented, when kid's night out rocks to the beat of Capt'n Davey and the Crazy Pirate Band.
