WATCH: Funnel Cloud Starts to Form over Rhode Island

A Patch reader from the Quonset area of North Kingstown sent along this video.

As residents in Narragansett took cover during a rare tornado warning on Tuesday evening, Sam Alexzandrea Silva was at home in the Quonset area of North Kingstown.

The section of the menacing cloud front appeared to be rotating, so she took out her phone and started recording.

In the video, it appears that a funnel cloud begins to form for a few moments before dissipating.

“The cloud was forming in the center of the video,” Silva explained. “It’s kind of hard to tell but the clouds are spinning, then it starts to die down.”

When asked why she wasn’t hiding in the basement or taking cover, “there have been water spouts over there before and nothing ever really comes of them,” she said. “Plus I’ve seen a full tornado in FL before so that kind of took the edge off.”

Though there was no tornado, Tuesday’s powerful thunderstorms did cause plenty of damage across Rhode Island. Strong wind gusts knocked down tree limbs, taking power lines down with them. A microburst was detected in Narragansett, with 50 mph-plus straight-line winds scattering debris, hurling lawn furniture, and even knocking over the ticket booth at the town beach.

There was flooding in Warren, Bristol, Newport and Tiverton, which also saw another house get struck by lightning. And some areas got about 3 inches of rain in less than 30 minutes, taxing drainage systems and sending anyone enjoying what had been a hazy and summery day scrambling for cover.
