Water Rescue Training For Narragansett Firefighters

Firefighters are using oxygen masks for another type of life-saving. On Tuesday, Narragansett firefighters put on diving gear and started a week-long water rescue training at some of the at-risk waterways throughout town.

The department started Tuesday at the mouth of the Narrow River, where it meets Narragansett Beach. Firefighters practiced rescuing swimmers and boaters.

"We tend to train where the incidents occur so our firefighters can get accustomed to the conditions and be more able to function in those types of environments,” Fire Chief Scott Partington told Turn to 10 News.

Firefighters on Wednesday trained at the waters off of Hazard Rock, where a fisherman was swept off a rock and pulled underwater by his waders. A passing boat pulled him to safety.
