Week Begins with Major Cool-Off, Rain

After highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s on Monday, temperatures will bounce back and sunshine returns on Tuesday.

The work week begins with a major cool-off and a soaking.

After summery weather a more-than week-long stretch of mild temperatures, Rhode Islanders will be greeted with noticeably cooler conditions and thunderstorms Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will be in the 50s to start the day and won’t break 60 for some parts of the state. Elsewhere, it will top out in the lower 60s.

A warm front approaching southern New England overnight Sunday into Monday will bring periods of heavy rain with nuisance and poor drainage flooding possible, the weather service said in a hazardous weather advisory issued Sunday evening.

The heaviest rainfall will be in central and western Massachusetts as well as northern Connecticut, though parts of Rhode Island could see one- to two-inches of rain before the showers end Monday night.

Most of the rain will be falling in the western, northern and southern portions of the state. Portions of central Rhode Island, mainly in Kent, Providence and Newport Counties will see a bit less with three-quarters to an inch of rain falling by Monday night.

Monday morning’s rush hour could be wet and with the potential for heavy localized downpours, traffic could be slowed due to low visibility, ponding and hydroplaning.

If the drop in temperatures is a bummer for you, consider that the state is still below average in terms of rainfall this summer and the rain is badly needed.

And temperatures will bounce back into normal territory with highs in the lower 80s and upper 70s Tuesday and Wednesday.

There’s a slight chance of rain on Tuesday. Clear skies return on Wednesday, but there’s a good chance of rain again on Thursday. The National Weather Service is said the chance of rain on Thursday is 50 percent.

Friday, Saturday and Sunny look to be mostly sunny with seasonable temperatures.
