Why 'Wait'?

The importance of learning to practice patience...

My Dear ol’ Mom has never likened herself an ‘arm-chair’ psychiatrist, and if you asked her, I’ll bet she wouldn’t even think that she has wise words to offer or sage advice to share; for her ‘learnings’ have culminated from a ‘life’-education and not that of an academic nature. Besides, she, as myself, would declare, in all likelihood, that ‘I‘m just who I am... I live by my ‘belief-system’ and I’ve paid attention in life, which has taught me a ‘thing or two’ along the way.’ With this being so, she does, quite often, make remarks (which we who know and love her refer to ‘Jackie-isms’) which make a WHOLE lotta sense and are full of her own ‘wisdom’. One of these ‘isms’ to which I refer is the statement: ‘In life one must have patience ~ otherwise he/she will become one (patient)!’ Perhaps, others have, indeed, expressed this same sentiment to those whom they know; however, my Mom is the ONLY person I’VE ever heard say this. When one thinks about it, it IS quite an astute statement; for when we do not practice at being patient we can, and often do, bring about our own type of personal ‘suffering’ ~ inviting unnecessary angst and stress to our table. We live in a society which seems to subscribe to the ‘hurry up and wait’ philosophy whereby a great number of us seek ‘instant-gratification’ and want things to present themselves to us ‘YESTERDAY’! The virtue of ‘Patience’ seems to be one of a diminishing nature and the word ‘WAIT’ is looked upon as a ‘Four letter word’! Often, in life, when we desire something we cannot get or must be patient to acquire, we complain and demand, or at other times, simply ‘move on’ to the next ‘thing’ when not quickly gratified. The ‘bottom-line’ is that not EVERYTHING we desire in life comes to us swiftly...life is not designed that way; although, due to the fact that so MANY aspects of our ‘technological’-existence DO furnish us with fast result, we have grown to imagine that ALL of life is this way; which, of course, it is not. Much in life must be achieved through ‘taking time’...patiently awaiting the result we desire; along with understanding, as well, that we will NOT always get the result, reaction, or conclusion we wish for. Owning the ability and the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset is a great ‘tool’ to have at one’s ‘disposal’ in life’. When we are willing to accept that we WILL benefit MORE by being patient than not, we are giving ourselves a great-gift of being gentler and kinder to ourselves. There is ENOUGH going on in the world, today, that can cause ‘corruption’ within our well-being; we needn’t add more to our ‘plates’. Years ago there was an ad on television whose ‘catchphrase’ was ‘We will sell no wine before it’s time’, indicating that it was ‘worth the wait’ to allow the wine to age properly to assure the best product. The same sentiment is applicable in life ~ some things ARE just ‘worth the wait’ and require patience, self-restraint, tolerance, understanding, and indulgence in order to culminate in the most ‘optimal’ of endings; and even IF we don’t ALWAYS realize the BEST outcome, it doesn’t have to be ‘sour-grapes’, for we can learn to have humility and become humble through our experience(s), which are OTHER life-lessons which serve us well. Just Sayin’...
