70-Degree Sunday Smashes Rhode Island Record
The springlike January weather beat last year's record by eight degrees.
This weekend, it was easy to forget that Christmas was only a few weeks ago. Instead of the usual January weather of snow and freezing temperatures, Southern New England enjoyed a lot of sunshine and balmy temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service, Sunday's high temperatures reached 70 degrees in Rhode Island, smashing the previous record, set just last year, by eight degrees. This time of year, the average temperature is 33 degrees, or about half of the recorded temperature.
The record-breaking temperatures were felt across the region. In nearby Boston, Sunday's high temperature reached 74 degrees, beating the previous record of 61 recorded in 1913, 1975 and 2017.
