Man In Mobility Scooter Struck In Newport Crosswalk, Driver Charged With DUI: Cops

NEWPORT, RI — A Newport man was charged with driving under the influence following a Wednesday night collision with a mobility scooter in a crosswalk.

The force of the collision propelled the mobility scooter about 30 feet, the Newport Police Department said in a media release.

The man in the mobility scooter was found lying on his stomach on the sidewalk after he was hit by the Toyota Tacoma in the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and Chapel Street shortly after 10:30 p.m., according to the release.

The injured man was flown to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence where he was in critical condition, the release said.

The driver of the Tacoma, Jose Monterroso Villagran, 47, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of liquor or drugs resulting in serious bodily injury and driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, according to the release.

"Preliminary findings suggest the crosswalk’s safety warning devices were not manually activated at the time of the collision," the release said.
