Another Rhode Island Beach Closed To Swimming
Gooseberry Beach in Newport is the eighth beach to be closed in Rhode Island in just one day.
NEWPORT, RI — An eighth Rhode Island beach has been closed to swimming by the Rhode Island Department of Health. Just hours after closing several beaches, the department announced unsafe levels of bacteria at Gooseberry Beach in Newport.
A total of eight beaches across Rhode Island were closed to swimming on Wednesday. The other closed beaches are:
- Easton's Beach, Newport
- Scarborough Beach South, Narragansett
- North Kingstown Town Beach
- Barrington Town Beach
- Saunderstown Yacht Club
- Camp Grosvenor, Saunderstown
- Bonnet Shores, Narragansett
Heavy rain earlier this week is the likely culprit for all the closures, as runoff carries contaminants into the water. Most high bacteria counts return to normal levels within a few days.
