Brown Poll: Clinton, Trump Ahead in RI

But the poll, which has a margin of error of 4 percent, shows one in six voters is undecided.

PROVIDENCE, RI—Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton are leading in the most-recent Brown University poll released Sunday.

The poll, which sampled 600 random registered Rhode island voters, shows Clinton leading Bernie Sanders 43 to 34 percent with 16 percent undecided.

Trump leads with 38 percent on the Republican side, followed by John Kasich with 25 percent and Ted Cruz lagging at 14 percent. Seventeen percent of Republican voters remain undecided.

Both Clinton and Trump hold slight leads among affiliated voters. It was when pollsters spoke with Independents and unaffiliated voters were polled that some striking details emerged.

Among the unaffiliated, Sanders leads Clinton by a whopping 20 point margin, 42 to 22. Twenty-four percent were undecided.

For Republicans, Kasich and Trump are tied at 31 percent with 13 percent picking Cruz and 8 percent undecided.

The poll also asked Rhode Island voters to weigh in on the state of the state, charter schools and marijuana laws.

More than half of those surveyed—54 percent—said the state is heading in the wrong direction. Results were split when people were asked whether Governor Gina Raimondo is doing a good or poor job.

A "strong majority" of Rhode Islanders (59 percent) said that charter schools should be expanded, according to the poll. It also showed that 62 percent supported spending more state money to promote tourism.

Rhode Islanders also said they didn't favor truck tolls (53 percent opposing, 38 supporting) and strongly favored marijuana legalization. Sixty-seven support existing medical marijuana laws and 55 percent support legalization.

Younger voters overwhelmingly support marijuana legalization. Voters 44 and younger support it by a whopping 72 percent. Voters older than 65 favor it narrowly, 43 to 42 percent.
