NHS Receives Grant to Support Archive of the American Revolution (newportthisweek.com subscription) — Newport's own Historical Society just secured a $245,000 federal grant to digitize thousands of Revolutionary-era documents, making the city's rich history far more accessible to residents and researchers. The project will fund new scanning technology, translation tools, and extended research support as Newport marks the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Rosecliff lecture looks at how Newporters used the Revolution to argue for their own (whatsupnewp.com) — Newport residents can explore how generations of Newporters have used Revolutionary War memory to push for civil rights and change at a Rosecliff lecture on September 10. Curator Nicole Williams will trace stories from Black Newporters after the Civil War through the modern Civil Rights and American Indian movements, with tickets available for both in-person and Zoom attendance.
   

3. Newport Residents Push Back Against Plans for Park on John Street (ecori.org) — Neighbors around John Street Park in Newport are questioning police plans to rename their small green space for Officer Eugene Barker and add a first responder memorial that could draw more visitors and ceremonies. Residents say they support honoring fallen responders but worry about traffic, parking, and losing quiet open space, while the department is revising designs before the City Council makes a final decision.
   

4. History-Making Sailor Cole Brauer First Light Book Signing (newportthisweek.com) — Charter Books is bringing record-setting solo sailor Cole Brauer to the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport on September 16 for a ticketed talk and signing of her new memoir, "First Light." Local sailing fans can hear Brauer in conversation with Newport-based sailing champion Linda Lindquist, with admission including a copy of the book and a chance to engage with two trailblazing women in the sport.
   

5. Richard Munday, A Colonial Architect-Builder (newportthisweek.com) — Newport history buffs can dive into the legacy of colonial architect-builder Richard Munday, whose designs include Trinity Church, the Old Colony House, and the Seventh Day Baptist Meeting House. A public lecture on September 14 at Honyman Hall will explore how his work helped shape Newport's early identity as a center of trade, governance, and religious tolerance.
