Curbs, New Sidewalks this Week on Broadway Near Equality Park

New curbing and sidewalks will be placed near Equality Park this week.

It might seem like the Broadway Streetscape project will never end, but progress is being made every week.

This week, the state Department of Transportation plans to install curbing at Equality Park before new sidewalks are installed.

They’ll also continue “various landscape items” along the east side of the project.

Parking will remain restricted next to Equality Park along Broadway.

“In the coming weeks, we plan to make utility adjustments to the pavement grade between Bull Street and Cranston Avenue. This work may require lane shifts and short-term impacts to parking in the immediate work areas,” the DOT said in a release.

The DOT is in the process of rebuilding the roadway and overhauling sidewalks and pedestrian infrastructure.

Among the changes will be widened sidewalks in some areas, new landscaping, light fixtures, road striping, signals and a switch from parallel to head-in parking in areas that aren’t head-in already.

Cardi Corporation holds the $5.8 million contract.

Funding for the project was made possible through federal sources, including Safe Routes to School, in addition to the Rhode Island Municipal Road and Bridge Revolving Fund.

The city’s Department of Utilities also has work planned elsewhere in the city.

This week, the city will be doing prep work for improvements to the Friendship Street Sanitary Sewer between Broadway and Hope Street.

Crews, as part of citywide water distribution main improvements, will also be working on permanent trench restoration starting with Everett Street, Cozzens Court, Fountain Street and Bowery St.
