Campbell Soup Heiress & Newport Socialite Dodo Hamilton Died Tuesday: Philadelphia Inquirer Says

Dorrance Hamilton, Campbell Soup heiress, died Tuesday in Florida.

NEWPORT, RI — Dorrance Hill Hamilton died Tuesday morning at her home in Florida, the Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting. Hamilton, billionaire heiress to the Campbell Soup fortune, had homes in Pennsylvania, Florida and Newport. She was a socialite who also founded Newport's Swiss Village Farm Foundation, dedicated to preserving rare livestock breeds. Known as Dodo, she also gave generously to various local organizations, including Blithewold and Salve Regina University. She gave millions to institutions and schools in Pennsylvania, as well.

Hamilton was known for her flowers, which she exhibited at various garden club shows, including Philadelphia and Newport. She was also a competitive croquet player, who wore enormous hats and elaborate costumes to the annual Tea Dance at the Newport Casino.

She was 88.
