Call for Original Short Plays

STAGERightRI is excepting application and submissions of Original Short Plays for the Newport Theatre Festival. The festival is scheduled for March 2nd, 3rd and 4th 2012. The weekend festival will showcase original short plays written by New England playwrights with the maximum runtime of twenty minutes.

Official selected entries will be publicly screened in competition during the festival. There is a $100.00 entry fee for submissions. Eligibility requirements are that the submission must be an original piece written by a New England playwrights. The submission must have no prior screenings or performances (excluding workshops) for acceptance into the festival. Applicant agrees to the have the festival reading committee to decide on scripts director and festival admittance.

Applicants must submit projects not to exceed 20 minutes in total running length. All plays will be directed by NTF assigned directors and actors will be determined by a casting ca+ll that all directors will attend. All plays will be staged with the following items: 3-5 various size, style and color, open free standing frames and three square black boxes all different in size. All set designs will be determined by assigned directors. Lighting, sound will be a basic house plot with a small window of change. Submissions may originate from any applicable form of media. All submission must include a synopsis of the projects. Additionally, the submission of press kits is encouraged. The postmark submission deadline for all entries is January 15, 2012.

The festival will be limited to a determined limit based on quantity and quality of submissions. All applicants will be notified of their status on or before February 1, 2012. Please do not contact our offices prior to notification date except in emergency situations. All submissions must be written in standard play format and must be in English. SUBMISSION COPIES WILL NOT BE RETURNED.

AWARDS
Three major prizes will be given by the Official Jury, along with an Audience Award, and a prize to the most promising student playwright. The complete list of awards, including prize money, as is follows:
GRAND JURY PRIZE—cash award of $1,000
SILVER MEDAL—cash award of $600
BRONZE MEDAL—cash award of $400
NTF Outstanding Student Award (Individual or Cast)–cash award $300
Audience Award—cash award $200 (Audience Favorite)
Creative Award - Trophy (creative excellence)
The Official Jury will also cite theatre productions in numerous categories including script, production design, and acting.
