A very special lecture by Prof. Victor Nuovo; Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Middlebury College & Senior Research Fellow, Manchester Harris College, University of Oxford Philosophical Reflections on John Locke’s idea of toleration
Dr. Nuovo's presentation will focus on the philosophical ideas of John Locke, one of the most important foundational thinkers behind America's constitutional government. Using Locke's 1689 Epistola de tolerantia (Letter concerning toleration published in Holland), the discourse provides Locke's idea with historical context, develops it through a critical exposition, and concludes with a relevant argument "commending toleration as a policy that all societies should adopt and practice." Dr. Nuovo notes that the form of toleration he recommends will be different or at least differently motivated from what Locke proposed.
