New Bedford Whaling Museum Loan Exhibit Lecture at The Newport Antiques Show, "Kindred Port: Art & Affluence in 19th Century New Bedford"

The 2012 Newport Antiques Show loan exhibit, Kindred Port: Art & Affluence in 19th Century New Bedford, will be presented by the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Located in New Bedford, MA, the Whaling Museum is the world's most comprehensive museum devoted to the global story of whales and whaling. The museum’s Guest Curator Keith W. Kauppila, a Whaling Musuem Trustee and Collections Committee member, will offer a lecture on Saturday July 28th at 11am.
Mr. Kauppila will share details about the lives of the artists, the subject matter of their paintings, and how the Old Dartmouth region (which today includes, the city of New Bedford and the towns of Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven and Westport) grew to provide an environment beneficial to artistic development as growing wealth created increased leisure time and interest in the arts. He will also discuss some of the ways in which New Bedford artists influenced each other, while drawing inspiration from the scenic locale to create significant works.
Funds raised through Newport Antiques Show ticket sales and sponsorship support the Newport Historical Society and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County.
