The Newport Public Education Foundation and Middletown Education Collaborative will co-sponsor a free screening of the documentary Race to Nowhere. The organizations say:
"The critically-acclaimed film examines the complex and demanding challenges of today’s students and educators who are fully immersed in what the film describes as 'the dark side of America’s achievement culture.' Featuring the personal and heartbreaking stories 'of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink,' Race to Nowhere raises poignant questions about the state of education in the U.S. today and what is being done to, as filmmakers describe, mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens. The film also features the observations renowned psychologists, authors and academic leaders."
An open discussion will follow the film. Doors open at 6 p.m. and concessions will be available.
