MLK Center Needs Some More Volunteers for Two Charity Races, Including the Big Bridge Race

There's room for a few more runner and volunteers at the upcoming charity run.

NEWPORT, RI -- The Martin Luther King Center is putting out the word it needs a few new Team MLK members to help with two upcoming road races.

The Newport Marathon is set for Sunday, Oct. 9, and the Pell Bridge Run goes off two weeks later on Sunday, Oct. 23.

Both races are opportunities to raise money for the center, which provides thousands of meals and other services to the needy.

According to Nancy Harten," we need volunteers need volunteers for both race days and the two days of registration/packet pick-up preceding each race." Harten said there are plenty of shifts still to be filled, but we "especially could use some "early birds" to help on the mornings of both race days."

The commitment for the Newport Marathon would be one the two days preceding the race -- on Friday, Oct. 7 from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Long Wharf Mall and on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Easton's Beach Rotunda.

On race day, Oct. 9, the volunteers are needed to help with registration between 5:15 and 7:30 a.m. and/ or at the Finish Line from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Then for the Pell Bridge Run, the schedule is from 2:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21; from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, and on race day, from 5:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

All the volunteer shifts are at the Newport Visitors Center, but Harten said to note the times are "available" shifts. Some shifts will be shorter, she said.
