Newport Harbormaster To Require Permits For Dinghy Dock
Starting this summer, dinghy users will be required to have a sticker permit to tie up overnight.
NEWPORT, RI — In an effort to reduce overcrowding at the Stone Pier Dinghy Dock, the Newport Harbormaster will require a sticker to tie up a dinghy overnight. The pier is a popular spot for residents to tie up dinghies and small boats, which frequently causes overcrowding and safety concerns.
In early May, the Newport City Council approved the ordinance, which intends to lower the number of small boats left unattended at the pier for long periods of time.
"We recognize that simply getting out on the water – even if it’s just on a small tender – is an important source of enjoyment for many longtime residents," said Harbormaster Tim Mills. "We want to make sure that all boaters are able to safely enjoy the harbor – regardless of the size of their boat."

Under the new permit program, owners of boats less than 12 feet long are still free to tie up at the Stone Pier Dinghy Dock, however a special permit sticker will be required to leave a boat tied up overnight.
A mooring permit is not required to apply for a sticker. There are two ways to apply: in person at the Harbormaster's Office at 39 America's Cup Blvd. or anchorage users can reach the harbormaster on VHF Channel 16 and request a sticker from a patrol boat. Anyone who already has a commercial or individual mooring permit will also have to apply for a sticker.

Those with a mooring permit holder or anchorage users do not have to pay a fee for a sticker. Residents without a mooring permit are required to show proof of residency with a Newport voter ID card or driver's license as well as pay a $50 annual sticker fee. All applicants must submit a copy of state issued boat registration for the dinghy.
If you have any questions about the stickers or application process, contact the harbormaster's office by calling 401-845-5815 or emailing tmills@cityofnepwort.com or smariani@cityofnewport.com.
