Rhode Island Enters 2021 Out Of Drought Status

The state was cleared of its drought status for the first time since May just before the year ended.

PROVIDENCE, RI — For the first time in months, Rhode Island is no longer in a drought. Rain and snow over the past months cleared the state's extreme drought status, which peaked in October.

According to the National Weather Service, the last time the state's drought map was clear was May 26. Throughout the summer and fall, low precipitation amounts led to unseasonably dry conditions in the state.

In September, Gov. Gina Raimondo issued a statewide drought advisory for Rhode Island, and the state was categorized as being in "extreme drought," the third of four levels of severity, in October.
