RI Power Outages: 8.7K Remain In The Dark After Intense Winds

More than 8,700 Rhode Islanders are still without power after wind gusts of over 60 mph hit the state.

Thousands of customers remain in the dark after Friday's intense winds knocked out power in communities across Rhode Island.

According to National Grid, more than 8,700 customers are still without power as of Saturday morning. Check the status of an outage using Nationals Grid's interactive power outage map.

Wind gusts exceeded 60 mph knocking down trees and utilty poles. Several police departments and community groups reported downed trees blocking roads.

Several roads across the state remain closed. In South Kingstown, Middlebridge at Bridgetown Road and Curtis Corner Road from Kingstown Road up to Asa Pond are among the closures.

Some communities like South Kingstown have opened warming centers for people still without power. Residents can go to Peacedale Library and Kingston Library if they need a warm place to go. Both libraries are open until 5 p.m.

Drivers are reminded to never drive under fallen trees or wires and to call the local police department or National Grid to report road hazards.
