Schools Canceled, Free Meals Available As Gas Outage Continues
At the end of the gas outage's second day, restoration efforts continue. Newport schools have been canceled for the remainder of the week.

NEWPORT, R.I. -- As the gas outage in Newport reaches the end of its second day, Gov. Gina Raimondo has arranged for food assistance for affected residents. Classes at all Newport Public Schools are canceled for the rest of the week.
Starting Wednesday morning, free meals will be available at the Florence Gray Community Center on York Street. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Those who are enrolled in Newport's Food Backpack program can pick up food backpacks from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Pell Elementary on Dexter Street. Families that are not a part of the program can pick up backpacks from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Meals on Wheels deliveries are slated to continue throughout the week and senior meal sites at Edward King House and Middletown Senior Center will stay open as well.

Classes will proceed as usual at Salve Regina University on Wednesday.
