U.S. Marines Visit Grave of Pvt. Bernardo Cardines
Marines from the U.S. Consulate in Naples, Italy, pay tribute to Pvt. Bernardo Cardines.
On Monday, November 20, 2018, Marines from the U.S. Consulate in Naples, Italy, traveled to Venafro, the hometown and final resting place of Private Bernardo Cardines, to make presentations to living relatives and to place a World War I marker and American flag on his grave. The visit was part of the Rhode Island World War One Centennial Commission's commemoration of the service and sacrifice made by Private Bernardo Cardines during America's participation in the Great War.
The event in Venafro was a continuation of the commemorative Army-Navy baseball game and re-dedication of Bernardo Cardines Memorial Field which occurred on Friday, September 29, 2017. Items from that game were presented to Bernardino Cardines, the great nephew of Private Cardines.
The Rhode Island World War One Centennial Commission continues to plan and execute commemorative events such as this to honor the Rhode Islanders who served during World War I.
