Coventry Woman Survives Suicide Attempt off Jamestown Bridge

The woman was rescued by the North Kingstown harbormaster.

A 28-year-old Coventry woman was pulled alive from the waters of Narragansett Bay after she jumped from the Jamestown-Verrazzano Bridge in an apparent suicide attempt on Sunday.

Police said the woman was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment after the North Kingstown harbormaster retrieved her from the water.

North Kingstown Police Chief Thomas Mulligan said that the harbormaster was near the bridge when the woman jumped from the center span.

The bridge rises more than 140 feet and the woman somehow survived the jump, swimming to the harbormaster’s boat as he approached for the rescue.

The harbormaster transported her to the Plum Beach Club in North Kingstown and she was taken to the hospital by an ambulance that was waiting by the shore, police said.

In 2012, a man in his 20s survived a similar jump and was also rescued by the North Kingstown harbormaster.
