DMS Dragons Fall To Curtis Corner In Season Finale

Curtis Corner starting pitcher struck out 12 batters to lead the Cougars past Davisville Tuesday.

The Curtis Corner Middle School softball team ended its season on a high note, holding on for a 5-4 victory over Tuesday at Curtis Corner Middle School.

“We’ve had great improvement from start to finish, and in the second half of the season we knocked off two playoff teams,” Curtis Corner head coach Ray Tanguay said.

“It’s a great high for them, because I told them that this is what you work all year for, to put yourself in position to play a meaningful game in the last game of the year.”

In the early going it appeared as if the Cougars were in store for a long day, as the Dragons’ Molly Feid, Rachel Sullivan, Shawna Deering and Kiara Oliver each crossed the plate in the top of the second to give Davisville a 4-1 lead.

Curtis Corner starting pitcher Sage Fatiades settled in after that point, however, shutting out Davisville in the final five innings.  Fatiades ultimately finished with 12 strikeouts on the game.

“Sage was very sharp today, she’s has a great season and they played good defense behind her too,” Tanguay said.

The difference for the Cougars came in the bottom of the fourth inning, were they were finally able to get a big inning against Davisville starter Kiara Oliver.

Curtis Corner got three of its first four hitters on base thanks to walks, and was able to plate them on pass ball and hits from Olivia Sweet and Tara Miller.

“They’re very resilient, and it’s taking pretty much the whole season for them to get to the point where they believe in themselves and play through that adversity,” Tanguay said.  “They finally believe it, and now that they can get through it.”

The Cougars were able to keep the Dragons at ay once taking the 5-4 lead behind the pitching of Fatiades, as well as some nice defensive plays from Sweet behind the plate, left fielder Molly Comstock and Miller in right field.

While Curtis Corner may have finished the season just 4-8 in the Southern Division (5-8 overall), they improved throughout the season and finished the season by winning four of their last six games.

“We had some real quality wins in the second half of the season,” Tanguay said.  “I think that this is going to be a real big incentive for the kids coming back next year.”

Davisville will now be in a must-win scenario on Thursday when they face Westerly Middle School with a playoffs berth on the line.

“We’ll have an extended practice tomorrow and we’ll work on the things that we need to work on,” Berndt said.  “We lost the first game to Westerly 11-6, so it’s going to be a battle.”
