Electrical Malfunction to Blame for High School Evacuation

An apparent electrical malfunction set off the fire alarm at North Kingstown High School, evacuating the school's 1,600 students in the rain.

North Kingstown High School was evacuated 1:45 p.m. Thursday after the school's fire alarm was triggered following an apparent electrical malfunction, sending the school's 1,600 students out into the pouring rain.

Students waited in the rain for busses to arrive for dismissal. At around 2 p.m., the North Kingstown Fire Department cleared the building, allowing students and staff to return outside to retrieve belongings.

The fire department is pointing to an electrical malfunction as the cause of the trigger and do not suspect it was an intentional act.
