About the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum: Located on 23 acres, the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum contains the authentically restored and furnished 1750 home and snuff mill where Gilbert Stuart was born. The Museum, set in the woods on a beautiful millpond and stream, has the working Stuart snuff mill, an operating gristmill, fish ladder, and colonial herb garden. Visitors enjoy our nature trails with scenic overlooks of the pristine Carr Pond and stunning flora and fauna. Artists find inspiration on our beautiful grounds. Art exhibits and period works are on display in our Welcome Center and Gallery. Tours include discussions of the water-powered operation of the Hammond Gristmill and the snuff mill, colonial daily life, use of herbs, explanation of the fish run and fish ladder, and the life and works of Gilbert Stuart. Here the “past becomes immediate” through history, art, and nature.
