Get Out: Improv, Stargazing, Polo & More

1. Frosty Drew Nature Center & Observatory

Where/When: Ninigret Park, 62 Park Lane, Charlestown | Friday, June 3 from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Why Go: Those in the market for an out-of-this-world experience will love the nature center and observatory. Take advantage of the clear skies projected for Friday night by getting away from the hustle-and-bustle and enjoying the serenity of a brilliant, starry night.

2. The Contemporary Theater Company

Where/When: CTC Studio, 50 South County Commons Way, South Kingstown | Sunday, June 5 from 5:30 - 7 p.m.

Why Go: Laughter is good medicine. Unwind and enjoy an evening of humor to re-charge for the week ahead.

Started in 2005 as a collaborative summer project, the Contemporary Theater Company has grown to showcase over 25 full-length productions, according to the troupe's website. The theatrical organization consists of numerous Rhode Island residents, both young and old, that are passionate about the performing arts and revitalizing them in Rhode Island. 

Pricing: $5 suggested donation

3. Newport International Polo Series

Where/When: Glen Farm, 715 East Main Road, Portsmouth | Saturday, June 4 at 5 p.m.

Why Go: The Newport International Polo Series kicks off its twentieth-anniversary season Saturday. Team USA will face top-notch rival Argentina, a group hungry to avenge a 2009 loss to team USA, according to Newport International Polo's website. For more information, call 847-7090.

Pricing: $10 general admission

4. Fort Adams Family Fun Day

Where/When: Fort Adams State Park, 90 Fort Adams Drive, Newport | Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: Head to Fort Adams State Park for a day of carnival-like concessions and fun for the whole family, including kite flying, face painting and pony rides.

Staff from the Rhode Island Blood Center will be on hand conducting a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a portion of the proceeds raised from activity fees will benefit the Fort Adams Trust. For more information, call 841-0707.

Pricing: Free admission; certain activities charge a charitable fee.

5. Special Olympics Summer Games

Where/When: Meade Stadium, The University of Rhode Island Athletic, 3 Keaney Road, Kingston, RI 02881, Kingston | Friday, June 3 through Sunday, June 5; the Opening Ceremonies begin Friday at 10:30 a.m.

Why Go: Support the special-needs community in Rhode Island this weekend by cheering for your favorite athlete(s) at the Special Olympics Summer Games. The event will be an opportunity to learn about Special Olympics of Rhode Island, the athletic resources available to those with special needs and may even spark a desire to get involved in the non-profit organization.
