Pair of Brothers Arrested in Alleged Cell Phone Theft
Gustavo Leandro Mercedes Dominguez, 20, of 114 Colfax St., Apt. 1 in Providence was arrested July 20 at 12:10 p.m. on charges of larceny and obstructing an officer. His brother Yordany Leandro Dias Dominguez Jr., 21, was also arrested on charges of obstructing an officer.
Mercedes Dominguez allegedly stole a cell phone from a coworker at Sea Fresh USA, who had left it in the break room. According to reports, Dominguez told his supervisor he wasn’t feeling well and asked to leave work. The victim allegedly suspected Dominguez and the company called police. According to police, officers found Dominguez on West Davisville Road near Route 403 where he appeared to be waiting for someone.

When the officer asked Dominguez if he had a cell phone on him, he allegedly pulled the phone (which matched the description of the stolen phone) out of his pocket and told police it belonged to him. While driving Dominguez back to Sea Fresh to finish the investigation, he allegedly admitted to stealing the phone but “only to call his brother” – Dias Dominguez – who arrived at that point to pick up his brother.
Police returned Dominguez to his place of employment to complete the investigation. While inside, an employee allegedly informed the officer that Dominguez had escaped from the police cruiser and was running away. According to reports, several witnesses saw Dominguez’s brother (who had followed police to Sea Fresh) let him out of the squad car. Dias Dominguez was subsequently arrested on charges of obstructing an officer. Police Chief Thomas Mulligan found Dominguez later on hiding under an old construction trailer near the business, according to reports.
