NK Woman Charged With DUI To Police: "Drank Too Much Booze"
Erin D. Vakalis, 24, of 552 Devils Foot Road, Apt. B308, was arrested June 18 at 10:53 p.m. on charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving.
After a neighbor called in an accident involving a possibly intoxicated driver hitting a tree and curb, police found a white sedan stopped on a nearby curb/sidewalk area. The car appeared to have substantial damage to the front driver side, including a flat tire, and a broken headlight.
Police found Vakalis with her head across the center console of the vehicle and appearing to have difficulty sitting up. According to reports, Vakalis didn’t respond verbally to police for several minutes and when she did, her speech was slurred and she strongly smelled of alcohol. According to police, she said, “drank too much booze” and didn’t want to get out of the car.
Vakalis refused to submit to sobriety tests when asked by police. After ensuring her wellbeing through a series of tests at Kent County Hospital, she was asked to perform a chemical test, which she also refused. Police noted that Vakalis said the same things and asked the same questions even after being provided with answers. She allegedly repeatedly asked police, “Did I hurt anyone?” and “What did I hit?” According to police, she admitted to drinking alcohol while at her cousin's residence and was on her way home but did not have complete memory of the trip.
Vakalis is set to appear in Fourth District Court on July 12.
