Ian J. Murray, 22, of 25 Lebaron Drive in East Greenwich, was arrested July 2 at 2:03 a.m. on charges of reckless driving and drunken driving.

While several police cars were parked on the side of Post Road, one officer noticed Murray’s car approaching the police cars and did not appear to be changing lanes to avoid a collision. Though Murray's car did not strike the cruisers but came very close, according to police. One of the officers who followed Murray's car allegedly watched the car swerve dramatically and pulled the car over. When the officer came to the driver’s window, he noticed that Murray allegedly smelled strongly of alcohol and had bloodshot and watery eyes. He did not have his license on him at the time. According to police, Murray admitted that he’d “had about four beers” and told police that he was heading to a friend’s house.

When asked to take the field sobriety test, Murray was allegedly barely able to stand without holding onto the side of his car. When finishing the test, he allegedly stated, “Am I really that drunk?” According to reports, when police asked Murray again how much he had had to drink he said, “I actually had eight beers.” Murray was handcuffed and driven to headquarters. During this time, Murray allegedly repeatedly apologized for the near collision and said, “I drive drunk all the time. I consider myself a safe drunk driver. I didn’t actually hit you so what’s the big deal?”

At headquarters, Murray refused to submit to a chemical test. After signing his fingerprints card, he allegedly slammed the pen on the table and asked the officer, “Why did you want to be a cop and do this to people like me?” According to police, he went on to explain that some people can drink and drive and that he is one of those people. He said “I can drive better than a woman when I’ve been drinking.” He later apologized for his comments. “I really didn’t mean it, I’m just drunk.”

Man Arrested After Vandalizing His Own Residence

Richard C. Fischer, 51, of 1105 Tower Hill Road, Apt. 4 in North Kingstown, was arrested on July 1 at 10:09 p.m. on charges of vandalism and disorderly conduct.

Police responded to a call regarding a verbal dispute and possibly a man with a knife. A neighbor stated he had heard screaming and a loud crash from within the apartment. Police located Fischer and the victim within the apartment but asked the victim to leave so they could question Fischer separately.

Fischer told police that he was having drinks with the victim when they became involved in a verbal altercation. Fischer told the victim to leave so they could be separated for the night but the victim refused. Fischer said it was at this time that a neighbor had come by telling Fischer that had better not hit the victim, according to reports. While speaking with Fischer, police noticed pieces of broken glass on the floor, which Fischer allegedly said was from a lamp he had accidentally broken earlier. Police also allegedly found a ripped woman’s shirt and ripped skirt in the garbage can. Fischer could not explain the ripped clothing but he said they belonged to the victim.

Police took several written statements from other neighbors concerning the incident. When police spoke with the victim, she refused to answer or cooperate to explain the ripped clothing and broken glass. Upon completion of the investigation, it was determined that Fischer was the primary aggressor and he was taken into custody.
