According to police, Dyson told officers he was returning from the Homestead Restaurant in Exeter with his passenger to a friend’s house on Hickory Drive in North Kingstown. Dyson then agreed to a field sobriety test after alleging he drank five beers while at the restaurant.

After failing the field sobriety test, Dyson was brought to headquarters where his blood alcohol content tested at 0.158 and 0.146. Following the failing samples, Dyson asked officers, “What did I blow? Let me guess, a 0.16?”

NK Man Hit With Drunken Driving Charge and Three Other Charges

Douglas Zina, 49, of 11 Hornet Rd. in North Kingstown, was arrested last Sunday at 7:19 p.m. on charges of drunken driving, reckless driving/eluding police and two counts of disorderly conduct.

An officer on patrol in Yorktown spotted Zina in his Chevrolet Lumina driving toward an SUV, causing the SUV to reverse quickly to avoid a head-on collision. Zina then got out of his car and began yelling obscenities at the driver of the SUV, prompting the officer to turn on his emergency lights and exit his cruiser. (According to the driver of the SUV, he did not know Zina and there was no incident that led up to the altercation. According to the driver, Zina was just “cocked” and “acting nuts.”)

As soon as the officer got out of his car and told Zina to stay where he was, Zina got back in his car and reversed quickly down Hornet Road. Zina then cut the wheel sharply, backing into the yard of 9 Hornet Rd. and nearly hitting the house. The officer, not breaking visual contact with Zina the entire time, saw Zina toss an open can of Budweiser from the car. (The officer also saw a six-pack with two missing cans in Zina’s car as well.)

When the officer asked Zina what happened, Zina stated, “What are you talking about, sweetheart? I didn’t do anything” and denied driving entirely. According to the officer’s report, Zina appeared to be under the influence while on scene. After refusing a field sobriety test, he was placed under arrest and began to act belligerent. Due to his erratic behavior, Zina was pepper sprayed after repeatedly kicking the doors of the police cruiser. During transport Zina remained belligerent, “screaming and spitting during the entire transport.” At headquarters, Zina continued to say “blah blah blah” while officers read him his rights.

Officers were unable to process Zina for arraignment due to his uncooperative behavior and placed him in lockup, where he began kicking the walls and climbing the cell bars.

Zina was released on $200 personal recognizance.

Exeter Man Arrested on DUI Charge

Michael Shaw, 20, of 90 Evergreen Drive in Exeter, was arrested last Sunday at 10 p.m. on charges of drunken driving.

Police pulled over Shaw on Hamilton Allenton Road near Featherbed Lane after seeing him strike two snow banks and drive erratically. Shaw initially told police he had not been drinking, then changed his mind by saying, “Umm, okay. I have had a couple of beers, but that was earlier.” He alleged he had been at a friend’s house in Exeter where he drank six beers several hours earlier.

After failing the field sobriety test, Shaw was arrested and taken to headquarters where he refused to take a breathalyzer test. Also at headquarters, Shaw told apologized to police and said, “I have been drinking and I’m half in the bag.”

Shaw is set to appear in Fourth District Court on March 11.
