NK Police Log: 'Heavy Set' Man Steals $400 in Groceries From Dave's

The following information was supplied by the North Kingstown Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Man Steals More Than $400 of Food From Dave’s

Police are searching for a man who stole more than $400 in groceries from Dave’s Marketplace on Gate Road. According to reports, the man (described as heavy set and bald, wearing a black jacket, white shirt and blue jeans) entered the store and grabbed two reusable bags. At the seafood counter, the man ordered $75 worth of food, telling the clerk that the seafood was for a party for his boss. The man then went to the meat counter and ordered $350 worth of food, telling that clerk the food was for an anniversary party for his mom. The meat department clerk notified the store manager about the man after he saw him head toward the produce section instead of the registers.

According to the store manager, the man slipped out of the store through the front entrance before employees could intercept him. Those with information on this theft may contact the North Kingstown Police Department at 401-294-3316.

Defaria allegedly assaulted a woman after she came to pick him up from a friend’s house on Union Drive. According to reports, Defaria (who was reportedly intoxicated at the time) allegedly put his hand over the woman’s mouth and yelled, “I’m not [expletive] leaving” before dumping out her purse on the ground. When the woman attempted to leave and told him she was calling the police, Defaria allegedly grabbed her phone and keys from the ignition and slammed the door shut on her as she tried to get out of the car. After a brief struggle, the woman was able to get her phone and keys back. According to the victim, Defaria told her, “The cops will never catch me” and fled from the area on foot.

Police did end up catching Defaria only minutes later: Defaria allegedly walked up to officers when police approached his group behind another building. Defaria allegedly put his hands behind his back without being asked to do so and admitted to arguing with the victim, dumping out her purse on the ground and shutting the car door in her face.
