Man Charged For Signing Fake Check

Harry J. Whitford, 40, of 2 State Street, Apt. G in North Kingstown was arrested Nov. 3 at 2:01 p.m. on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses and a felony charge of forgery.

Whitford allegedly stole a check from a roommate, forged her signature and deposited it in a neighbor’s bank account. According tot he 59-year-old victim, Whitford was going to loan him $60 until his social security check came through. Instead of returning with cash, Whitford came back with a check and signed it for $800. Whitford then allegedly drove the man to the bank and deposited the check in the man’s bank account for him, and then withdrew the $800 – keeping $740 for himself.

The following week, the victim received a letter from the bank stating that the account the check was attached to was either closed and had insufficient funds and that the man was on the hook for the missing $800. Attached to the letter was a copy of the check, which the victim realized was not in Whitford’s name but his roommate’s and that he had forged her signature.

Narragansett police arrested Whitford the following week on an arrest warrant from NK. He was released on $1,000 bail with surety.
