NK Police Log: Providence Man Charged in Hit-and-Run Accident

The following information was supplied by the North Kingstown Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Daniel Taveras, 25, of 16 Opper Street, Apt. 3 in Providence was arrested April 26 at 12:22 a.m. on felony charges of failing to stop at an accident (injury resulting) and driving to endanger (injury resulting) and a misdemeanor charge of drunken driving.

Taveras was allegedly driving under the influence when he attempted to pass a car on Old Baptist Road by crossing into the oncoming lane. According to reports, he lost control of the car and hit a tree and then, as he tried to drive away, hit a stone wall and several mailboxes.

Witnesses told police that the passenger tried to stop Taveras from leaving and yelled at him for wrecking his car. Taveras allegedly told her, “I can’t get in a cop car” got back in the car before allegedly backing into the woman and leaving the scene.

Officers found the car at the corner of Harrington and Nichols Roads. Taveras was found a short time later walking down Post Road, covered in blood and sporting several cuts and bruises. Both Taveras and his passenger were brought to Kent Hospital for treatment.

Taveras told police he tried to pass the car because the driver allegedly continud to slam on his brakes. When he attempted to pass the car, Taveras noticed another car coming in the opposite direction and, unable to get back into his travel lane, he swerved and hit the tree. He allegedly told police he fled the scene because he’s on parole and didn’t want to get in trouble. Police noted that, during questioning, Taveras appeared to be under the influence.

Cidalia Maria Baptista, 28, of 913 W. Main Road in Middletown was arrested April 24 at 10:05 a.m. following a bench warrant for her arrest.

Paul Rogers Noka, 25, of 915 Ten Rod Rd., Apt. 4 in North Kingstown was arrested April 24 at 7:15 p.m. following a bench warrant for his arrest.
