Westerly Man Charged With Assault With Knife After Alleged Road Rage
Mario Thomas Catoni, Jr. 24, of 82 High St., Apt. 23, was arrested last Thursday at 2:22 p.m. on charges of assaulting a man with a knife following an incident of road rage.
The victim told police he was traveling south on Chadsey Road when Catoni pulled out of Cory’s Car Wash and nearly hit him. After the two exchanged hand gestures and words, the victim got out of his car to speak with Catoni.
According to the victim, he told Catoni that he needed to be more careful and that they were “lucky that they didn’t both just get hurt.” Catoni allegedly replied, “You’re the lucky one,” and then pulled an open black folding knife out of his jacket pocket as he remained seated in his car.
The victim, feeling threatened, returned to his car and caught Catoni’s license plate number as he drove past, then promptly called police.
Police caught up to Catoni down the road, cutting in front of him to stop him from proceeding. At gunpoint, police ordered Catoni to put his hands up and then arrested him. At headquarters, Catoni alleged that he was planning on getting gas at Cory’s but the price was too high and pulled straight through to Chadsey. According to Catoni, he was speeding but stopped before entering Chadsey and claimed that the victim was probably just startled and swerved to avoid him. Catoni also alleged that he pulled out his knife after the victim attempted to instigate a fight and started walking toward his car.
Catoni is set to be arraigned in Fourth District Court on March 1.
