Woman Allegedly Lies About Health to Avoid Field Sobriety Test

Amanda Ryan Buffery, 29, of 138 Sunnybrook Drive in North Kingstown was arrested Feb. 15 at 1:48 a.m. on charges of driving under the influence and a cited for refusing to take a chemical test.

Police arrived on Sunnybrook Drive for a report of a car stuck in a snow bank. At the scene, they found Buffery’s Pontiac driving away from the area with a large amount of snow falling off the passenger side. When an officer put on his cruiser’s emergency lights and stepped out of his cruiser, Buffery allegedly got out of her car and started walking toward him. According to reports, she was very unsteady on her feet and began sobbing, “I know I can’t drive. I live two houses down. Let me call my friend and he can give me a ride.”

While speaking with Buffery, officers noted that her eyes were extremely bloodshot and water and that her speech was confused and mumbled. She also allegedly smelled of alcohol.

While police helped Buffery search for her registration and insurance forms, another officer allegedly saw an open can of Bud Light in her car. She also allegedly told officers that she was coming from Kingstown Bowl and had four beers there.

When officers asked Buffery to take a field sobriety test, she allegedly told them she couldn’t because she had to use the bathroom because she had Crohn’s disease. The officer, who was familiar with Crohn’s, asked Buffery who was her gastroenterologist, which allegedly stumped her. According to reports, she admitted she did not have Crohn’s, but reiterated that she lived close by.

Buffery allegedly refused to take the test, resulting in police placing her under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. While handcuffing her, police were approached by Buffery’s friend who told them he had driven her home from Kingstown Bowl. While speaking with the man, officers allegedly saw Buffery ask him to let her out of the police car. When confronted with this, she allegedly began to yell and curse, kicking the insides of the cruiser.

At the station, she refused to take a breath test.

Stephen Eugene Jezewski, 22, of 100 Sand Hill Drive in North Kingstown was arrested Feb. 16 at 1:45 a.m. following two bench warrants for his arrest.
