SCCAA Reminds Taxpayers of 2016 Filing Deadline
South County Community Action Agency is reminding qualified taxpayers that they may qualify for free tax preparation.

WAKEFIELD – The deadline for filing taxes is just over a month away, and South County Community Action Agency is reminding qualified taxpayers that they may qualify for free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance [VITA] program.
“With the April 18 deadline for filing federal taxes just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to contact our VITA program,” explained Joseph DeSantis, President and CEO of SCCAA. “Our free tax preparation is one of our most popular programs, and this year we’re also offering drop-off service for taxpayers who may not be able to schedule an appointment.”
VITA volunteers are certified by the Internal Revenue Service and work to ensure the highest possible Earned Income Tax Credit [EITC] and Child Tax Credit [CTC] for qualified applicants, who generally make less than $54,000 in income for 2015. Tax preparation services, including e-filing through the IRS, are free to those who qualify.

“The EITC and CTC greatly reduce poverty for working families,” said DeSantis, noting that SCCAA volunteers prepared more than 500 federal and state tax returns in 2015, resulting in refunds totaling more than $750,000 for local families, and saving an estimated $100,000 in private tax preparation fees.
In-person appointments are offered at the SCCAA main office, 1935 Kingstown Road, Wakefield, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop-offs require a brief interview with a preparer.
