Skippers Remain Undefeated With 18-2 Win Over Tiverton

The NKHS boys baseball team continued their Division I South dominance with a cogent 18-2 win over Tiverton at home on Thursday afternoon.

The boys from North Kingstown continued their undefeated season on Thursday in an 18-2 victory over the Tiverton Tigers. The game started off tight, but NK's bats blew it open within a few innings.

Tiverton knocked in two runs off starting pitcher Billy Young in the first inning: the only two runs they'd score all day.

NK responded quickly in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs and tying the game.  Young settled, and blanked Tiverton in the top of the second.  NK heated up offensively in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs and taking control of the game from then on.

Neither team scored a run in the third inning, and Young pitched his third consecutive scoreless inning in the top of the fourth. Going into the bottom of the inning, it was 5-2 with NK on top.

The Skippers blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a whopping 13 runs. Despite a few pitching changes by Tiverton, the Tigers were unable to contain the Skippers' slugfest.

NK starting pitcher Billy Young picked up the victory, pitching a complete game.

North Kingstown head coach Kevin Gormley kept his team level headed throughout the lopsided game, and also respectful to his opponent and the game of baseball.

"They won with class today," said Gormley. "Tiverton had one tough inning. That inning was big, but it was a 5-2 game heading into the bottom of the fourth.  I know Tiverton's coach. He played college baseball. He knows the game. He knows how to keep his team going.  You know, no matter what the score was, his team never threw their bats, their helmets, they continued to root for their teammates, and you know it makes you feel good to see that."

With the loss, Tiverton falls to (1-6) on the year.  The next game on their schedule has them traveling to Rogers on Saturday.  ame time is scheduled for noon.

The Skippers victory gives them a comfortable lead over second place East Greenwich. At 7-0 in the Division and 9-0 overall, the sky is the limit for NK.

They have little time to celebrate, taking on Fitch Senior High School today at noon.
