Viewfinder: Autumn at the Castle
Smith's Castle welcomed autumn in true colonial style.
Though the leaves are just beginning to change color throughout town, Smith's Castle ushered in the new season with its annual Harvest Festival with activities, delicious treats and – of course – colonial garb.
The festival, which has been held at the grounds of the historic site for decades, honors the 18th-century corn husking festivals that were popular during the days of the Updike family. Volunteers and docents donned colonial clothing while performing and demonstrating day-to-day activities from colonial times. Event goers were treated to demonstrations on how to make coffee and candles and feasted on apple crisp.
The castle was even part of the day's Big Draw, happening all across town from Shady Lea Mill to Wickford Village. Sarah Tallarico of the Wickford Art Association was on hand to help locals "put their imprint on history."

"They're just drawing on parchments whatever inspires them about Smith's Castle or the grounds," said Tallarico. The pieces will be compiled into collages, one to be displayed at town hall and another at Smith's Castle.
