Viewfinder: Ponies and Goats and Sheep! Oh My!
Allie's Tack & Feed kicks off its first annual Animal Appreciation Day.
Pony rides, a petting zoo, painting – it was no ordinary day at this weekend as the longtime North Kingstown business kicked off its first annual Animal Appreciation Day.
From the event’s start until its close at 5 p.m., customers and local animal lovers kept things busy down at the lower parking lot at the store – painting model horses as part of Breyer Fun Day, riding ponies and carriages, feasting on tasty treats and partaking in the petting zoo.
“A lot of people showed up and I’m really floored by the turnout we’re getting,” said Steve Briggs Jr., general manager of Allie’s.

The turnout is even more surprising considering it’s the first event the store has put on since 1993. Briggs anticipates it won’t be another 18 years for another event, however, adding they plan to host another event next year.
The conception of the appreciation day began when Purina offered a grand opening event for its brand line, now featured at Allie’s. For Briggs, it was the perfect opportunity to begin the event and incorporate one of his interests – the local 4-H foundation.

“A lot of people don’t even know about the 4-H club,” said Briggs. “I figured this would be a good way to get them out here and spread the word.”
In Rhode Island, there are multiple 4-H groups offering youth development opportunities, ranging from robotics to livestock and more.
All proceeds from the event benefitted 4-H and Ponies as Partners, a group offering equine therapeutic services.
